From Dog Eyes and Cancer
Christoph, Rainer Katharina and George investigated eyes of dogs in order to gain more knowledge about the development of eye melanoma. In contrast to skin melanomas, they are not related to sun exposure. Furthermore, these melanomas tend to spread early but for some reason, only if they are located at the posterior pole of the eye. Melanomas of the anterior part, however, are very benign.
In their „Dog research project”, they set up a novel hypothesis about melanoma development that is capable of explaining these special features. On top of that, they were able to show that gaining important data without harming the animals is possible in comparison to most animal experiments.
